A team of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in Wuhan this morning with a line machine from Singapore. A team of about ten experts is to investigate the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic in China.
International scientists can’t start right away. A spokesman for the Chinese health office confirmed yesterday: The usual rules apply to the WHO investigation team after entering China, ie a minimum 14-day hotel quarantine. Even during this time, it is said that international experts will exchange ideas with Chinese colleagues in video conferencing.
Experts come from Australia, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Japan, Qatar, Russia, the USA and Vietnam. The WHO delegation is led by Peter Ben Embarek, an expert on animal diseases that spread to other species.
An intermediate host was sought
The first cases of Covid 19 occurred in a Chinese city of 11 million Wuhan at the end of 2019. Most international scientists believe that the bats were the original hosts of the coronary lung virus. It is not clear which animal served as a transient host in human transmission. China’s leadership and media in the country claim that the virus was introduced to China from outside.
At its annual conference in May, the WHO decided to send an international team of experts to China to investigate the origins of the Covid pandemic. China’s state and party leadership has delayed the arrival of scientists for months. Observers do not expect WHO experts in China to be free to conduct research.
