Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S21, Plus and Ultra: a new era begins

Samsung today introduced three new high-end smartphones with the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra. You have to compromise a lot, especially with the smaller model, but you get the phone for a lower price. But the Galaxy S21 Ultra also loses an important function, but also gains something at the same time.

Samsung Galaxy S21: the best smartphone for the sane

Rumors surrounding the Galaxy S21 have been confirmed with today’s presentation by Samsung. Yes, the cell phone is much lighter compared to the Galaxy S20 in order to lower the price and better position itself against Apple’s iPhone 12. It’s now the phone for the sane who just wants a good device at a decent price. At 849 euros for the version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, you have to make compromises – like a reinforced polycarbonate back. But you also get something that many users are looking for which is a flat screen.

The Galaxy S21’s “Dynamic AMOLED X2” screen only has FHD +. It stays at a 120Hz refresh rate, so the content is displayed smoothly. The Exynos 2100 has an easy time here and can fully exploit the high performance. You have to do without the possibility of memory expansion. Incidentally, the microSD slot is no longer available in all S21 models, even in the Ultra. At least you have the choice of buying a 256GB model. 5G is standard everywhere. The battery is relatively large with 4000 mAh. An AC adapter is not included, nor the headphones.

Samsung

The appearance of the Galaxy S21 has changed significantly compared to its predecessor. The camera is now even sharper and is framed by the frame. The camera itself remains with three sensors which have a resolution of 12, 12 and 64 MP. It is only in the area of software that something has changed here. The fingerprint sensor is now larger and should work faster. Interestingly, Samsung decided not to use the UWB chip for the location of the device in this model. This function is only available from S21 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus: slightly better and significantly more expensive

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus costs $ 200 more than the S21, but it’s not much better. The back is made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, but otherwise the phone has been slimmed down a lot. For $ 1,049, there’s just 8GB of RAM and 128GB of non-expandable internal storage, a 6.7-inch, slightly larger but still flat FHD + display, and otherwise the same features. The battery is of course a little bigger at 4800 mAh.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: the best with the S Pen

Samsung

If you don’t want to compromise, other than the missing microSD slot, you can use the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which costs at least $ 1,249. There you will find everything you could want – and more. The 6.8-inch rounded screen not only has WQHD + resolution, but can also use 120Hz at full resolution. It has never worked before. In addition, the screen supports a variable refresh rate that operates between 10 and 120 Hz. The ability to use an S Pen is brand new. Until now, it only worked with Note smartphones. Samsung is breaking a tradition with this and even wants to extend it to other devices. So there is more to come.

The 108 MP quad camera, which this time is supported by two telephoto lenses, is also part of the equipment of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. This should allow the zoomed images to be of the quality expected in the price range. The image should be significantly better, especially at the maximum zoom level. There’s a 40 MP camera on the front, while the other two S21 phones use 10 MP sensors.

Otherwise, the smartphone’s new 5nm processor works here as well, but it’s supported by 12 or 16 GB of RAM and optional 128, 256 and 512 GB of internal memory. The battery measures 5,000 mAh. It is not known how fast this can be loaded. A power supply is of course not included here either.

Low surcharge for more storage space

Samsung

Since Samsung offers all S21 smartphones without a microSD slot, the surcharges for more storage space are limited. The upgrade from 128 to 256 GB costs only 50 euros. The S21 Ultra has a maximum of 512 GB. Then there is also 16 GB of RAM at a price of 1429 euros.
