The Federal Police continued to focus on actions against illegal migration. In general, the number of unauthorized crossings at the EU’s external border decreased in 2019. However, it grew on the so-called Eastern Mediterranean route – from Turkey to Greece – by 53 percent compared to the previous year. According to a report by the Federal Police, the expansion of the Balkan route on the land border of Germany and Austria is considered a “hot spot” for unauthorized entry into the Federal Republic.

Illegal entry by air is also important: Federal police see Greece as “the most important country of departure for illegal migration by air.” In 2019, 8,750 people were suspended before leaving (30 percent more than in 2018). In terms of the Crown, the numbers have dropped significantly in 2020; however, the phenomenon will continue to be observed. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, by August, federal police officers in Greece had prevented about 3,100 unauthorized trips to the Federal Republic.
