E.It was a scene to remember: Andreas Dietmer, an exemplary athlete from Neubrandenburg, kneeling in his narrow racing boat, had just secured Olympic gold in a single canoe 1,000 meters away in Sydney with strong thrusts – and there was no young woman on the shore to hold on anymore. This is his sister, triathlete Ange Dittmer, who just jumps into Lake Penrith, chooses a path to his brother and hands him a German flag. That was 20 years ago – it was September 30, 2000.
Now Dietmer is leading a new life.
WORLD: Then came the offer to work as a national coach in Canada, the country of origin of your sport.
Andreas Dietmer: The decision to make came wholeheartedly. I enjoyed every day when I was sitting there on a motorboat, and knew: for me it was the right decision to go back to sports.
